A married couple may live in the same house and get a along pretty well with each other. They may go about their daily responsibilities in the home without much friction between them. They may even have great respect for each other. In this sense, they are friends who share mutual interests–buying a house, raising a family, getting ahead at work. But marriage the way God planned it includes so much more than mutual interest, goals, and respect.
God intended for couples to become “one flesh”. He wanted them to develop such a like-mindedness with each other that there is an obvious mutual devotion, admiration and dependence upon each other. This kind of relationship is, first and foremost, about each other. Friends may be described as those who have mutual interests. The relationship is primarily about something outside the relationship–goals, projects, and so forth. Lovers are those who have mutual intimacy; the relationship is primarily about each other. Lovers find great their greatest joy to be the joy of the other.
Marriage was created by God to mirror the kind of relationship God wishes to have with us.
